CHESHIRE
SHOW 2010
Massey Feeds
major presence at the Cheshire Show being situated at
the entrance
of the Sainsbury's Agri Centre gave Massey Feeds a fabulous
location. Lexi the cow (christened by one of the sales teams
daughters) was a great attraction, with over 700 people
young and old enjoying the experience of milking. A large
thank you to all the customers families who helped with this task.
We also held a practical demonstration & competition to show the
daily need of the modern dairy cow. The FiMLAC protein &
mineral technology story caused a great deal of interest,
for further information and knowledge of feeding cows the FiMLAC way
please ring 01477 536300.
TRUCKFEST
2010 FURTHER SUCCESS - Massey Feeds
Drivers Do Well At Truckfest.
Three of our drivers entered their
wagons in Truckfest 2010 at
Haydock Park. Their wagons were Highly Commended on the Best
Fleet category. Congratulations must go to Matthew Jones,
Jimmy McMahon and Andy Jones for all the effort they put in! Andy
also won Highly Commended in the Best Rigid category too.
SAM'S SHOW SUCCESS It was a great 2 days at the Cheshire Show for one of Massey Feeds youngest customers. 15 year old Sam Bate has been interested in hens since the age of 2, when he was 4 his Dad & Mum bought him his first hens, he then started selling eggs at the farm gate. Sam's poultry business took a leap forward in 2007 when he purchased an incubator, this enabled him to hatch out different breeds of poultry, Sam started selling stock to local people many who were keeping hens for the first time, but purchasing from Sam not only gave them top quality stock but some very young and expert advice. This also enabled Sam to increase egg sales to neighbours, family and unsuspecting salesmen. In 2009 Sam tried his hand at showing and got 3rd with a Buff Orbington cockerel, this made him more determined to improve on this at the next show.
So this year Sam took Golden Gordon a Buff Orbington cockerel to the Cheshire Show where he won the best
Junior Soft Feather, Best in Breed and qualified for the National Poultry Show at Stafford later in the year. All the poultry are started on Massey Feeds Poultry Starter Crumbs moving on to Growers Pellets, at 16 weeks just prior to laying they are fed Millhouse Layers Pellets, Sam told me he uses Massey Feeds because they are palatable, grow the poultry at a good rate and give fantastic egg quality.
Sam was not content with his success in the poultry section, he along with his sister Emma were also showing Jersey's in the cattle section. At the start of 2010 the Bate family purchased 9 Jersey Cows & Heifers from a local farmer who was emigrating, they were bought for milk quality & according to Emma because they look pretty. Sam said the Jersey Cows & Heifers did not cost much to keep because he managed to pinch the FiLMAC feed that his dad uses for the main herd.
On the first day of the show Emma got 1st with Annita in the heifer born after April 2009 class, with Sam coming 2nd in the same class with Twinkle, Annita then went into the Championship. On the second day Sam entered the under 16 handling class where he came 1st, he then went onto win Champion Handler. Sam then entered Twinkle in the under 12 month old heifer class in which he came 2nd, which entitled them to go forward to the
Championship where they got Reserve Champion rounding off a couple of days that I don't think Sam will ever forget.
It
was a sunny afternoon when John Norbury from Massey Feeds visited Nick
Paterson's well respected pedigree Gloucester Old Spot herd. Nick
was telling John how he had started the herd six years ago, when right
on cue Lucy one of his first pigs bought, came to see what they were
talking about but found a puddle a lot more interesting, moving
on........ Nick who has had a lifetime interest in all animals finally
decided to concentrate on his outdoor Gloucester Old Spot herd, he liked
the idea of in his words "doing my bit to help save a rare breed of
pigs" it was also really important that the herd had to be a
welfare friendly herd, which was plain to see with all the pigs enjoying
the green fields and wallowing in the puddles. Since the start of
this enterprise the Sows have been fed on Massey Sow Rolls which Nick
said is a palatable product that keeps the sows in good condition whilst
producing plenty of high quality milk helping piglet growth, the piglets
are creep fed and finished on Massey Feeds Turbo 50 Pellets, this easy
concept has helped Nick to build up a successful pedigree herd,
selling finished pigs to local butchers who have commented on the
quality of the finish of these rare breed pigs. Nick went on the
explain that he was continuously looking to improve his herd with the
investment of new blood lines. Well done Nick Massey Feeds wish
you continued success.

Chipping, Preston, Lancashire on Wednesday 3rd June. The event was
the northern sheep industry's one day premier business to business
exhibition. Many of the farmers visited the Massey Feeds stand where
they learned of our wide range of sheep feed & services, whilst
enjoying the light refreshments with our Directors & Sales team. We
had many entries to our spot the difference competition, well done

CHESHIRE
SHOW 2009
Massey Feeds were at the Cheshire show in the Agri centre where the
theme was from field to plate, with the aim of informing the public
of where their food comes from. Massey Feeds helped to explain where
milk comes from with a practical demonstration on how much food a
cow would have to eat to produce 30 litres of milk, they were then
given a chance of milking a wooden cow to win a milk shake, this
proved to be very popular with more than 900 milk shakes served over
the 2 days. Another popular event on the stand was spot the
difference competition, one winner won a tonne of Calf Sweet Start Plts, & one a set of A4 white boards which children could win for
their class.
The
winner of the Tonne of Calf Sweet Start was Stephen Turnock of
Macclesfield, whose delighted father said the timing could not have
been better they had just discussed how they could improve the calf
performance When Phil Stirk from Massey Feeds arrived to tell them
they had won.
The
School winners were St Hughes of Timperley, who had brother & sister
Charlie & Millie Smith visit the Massey Feed stand to win their excited
class mates the prize. Thank you to Tony Garnett, Chairman of

Massey Feeds

Thank you to the large number of visitors who visited us in the

combined weight of both turkeys was 117 llb or 53.07 kgs. Again
a big thank you to Mr Willacy for the loan of the turkey's and
everyone else who contributed to an excellent day.
LENDING
A HAND TO BALANCING YOUR SILAGE

from our Silage Results page, this season's silage results are lower
than average so farmers are finding it difficult rationing their
cows. Contact your local Massey Feeds
Representative who will
be able to do a full rationing programme, and balance up your home
produce with one of our high quality Dairy Feeds, or we can
manufacture a product specifically for your farm. So don't put

Daisy the cow made an appearance where she was over milked but the education value was appreciated by the show organisers and farmers alike. We held a guess the weight of the turkey competition where the two turkeys were very well behaved but made even more noise than Rudders, the combined weight of the turkey's totalled 115 lbs 3oz. A big thank you to Peter Willacy for the loan of the Turkey's and thanks for all the hard work to everybody who made it a worthwhile day.
CHESHIRE SHOW
Massey Feeds were at the Cheshire show In the Agri Centre where the theme was from plough to plate, for our part we were promoting Cheshire Milk with the help of a wooden animal, as well as
John Norbury we had Daisy the cow, that everyone young and old had ago at milking to earn themselves a refreshing milk shake, even David Bellamy joined in as pictured above. We also had a display to show all
our visitors how much a cow would eat & drink in one day to produce 30 litres of milk. All the visitors thought the stand was fun and educational.

WHAT
LIES AHEAD FOR THE WINTER
With
milk prices rising and the prospect of meat prices following, it is
most important to get the highest potential from your animals. You
will have all read about the extremely high grain prices which means
it may be more economical to buy a complete diet from MASSEY FEEDS,
we can formulate a ration based on the available forage and feeds on
the farm. For more information go to
Tailor Made Feeds & Blends
or contact your local MASSEY FEEDS salesman.

GETTING
THE MOST FROM GRASS AT 900 FEET
70 farm ers
joined the Staffordshire N F U milk committee on a farm walk at Deans
Farms, near Wincle. MASSEY FEEDS sponsored the evening, where once again
the emphasis was on grassland management and the importance of being
able to measure how much grass is available for grazing.
Paul gave a
practical demonstration on how to use a plate metre.
Although, like
everyone else, he is experiencing a difficult summer it is still
important to use Grass Check to know how much milk the cows are
achieving from grass.
Deans Farms operate a simple (but very effective)
system with the cows in two tight calving blocks. The spring and autumn
calving groups give them the ability to make good use of the different
types of grazing that comes with a farm situated at over 900 feet above sea level.
This summer the cows are being fed Massey
Q-HS nuts in the Parlour, with
the
dry cows following MASSEY FEEDS dry cow programme.
NSA NORTH
SHEEP 2007
Masse y Feeds had a stand at the NSA North Sheep 2007 that was held at North Hanging Wells Co Durham.
One of the most prestigious sheep events held in our trading area,

the weight of various fleece. The winner was Mr Lawton from Penrith,
who won three tonnes of High Gain Lamb Finisher. Well done to
Mr Lawton.
CHESH IRE SHOW,
JUNE 2007
Last
month Massey Feeds had a stand in the Agri-Centre at the Cheshire Show, with a practical demonstration of
the importance

beer cans,
(ask your local Massey Feeds Representative for
more
information).
Western
Holstein Club June Show & Sale
Massey Feeds were pleased to sponsor the Western Holstein Club June
Show & Sale that was held at Beeston Auction. With such a high
calibre of cattle forwarded, the judge Mr Harold Crapper, had the
unenviable task of putting them in the correct order. The
overall champion was a heifer from Messrs M & J C Gould of
Shrewsbury.
With renewed optimism in the dairy industry, all the cattle sold
well, making an average of over 1350 guineas with the champion
selling for
3000 guineas.
GRASS

you can’t manage it”
Once again Massey Feeds will be
offering their customers the facility of Grass Check, this is a
realistic attempt to match Grazing, Concentrates & performance in

through out the grazing season.
MASSEY
FEEDS SPONSOR CHESHIRE GRASSLAND SOCIETY SPRING WALK
Cheshire
Grassland Society
held their latest farm walk at Paul Dean's
farm
near Wincle in Cheshire. Approx 40 farmers went along to join them. The
farm operates an extensive grazing system for its 80 spring
calving cows. the winter calving block of 50 are fed on a simple
self feed silage system. The ethos of the farm was to concentrate on
1 job at once. The spring calving cows were calved in a 6 week
block. Bulling takes place in a short period so the rest of the year
can be used to focus on converting grass to milk supplemented by a
product from the Massey Feeds Q-HS range.
There will be a further chance for you to visit Paul's farm on Thursday
12th July, when Massey Feeds will be sponsoring another walk.
Details to follow.

a stand at the Beef Expo at Skipton Mart. With 23 different breeds of
beef and over 6,000 visitors the show was the most successful yet. The
stand was busy most of the day with both familiar and new faces.
All aspects of the beef industry were discussed, whilst the
demonstration of the beef forecasting system attracted plenty of
interest, with many farmers asking us to give personal and group
demonstrations. For more information on this unique system
click here or phone Massey Feeds on

Our competition this year asked entrants to identify 18 different cuts
of meat. This evoked plenty of discussion between our visitors to the
stand. The eventual winner was Mr C Lumb from Halifax, who was
delighted to win three tonnes of
BEEF 70/30 NUTS.

DOES IT PAY TO FEED AT GRASS?
With volatile raw material
prices and availability, farmers may be tempted not to feed
concentrates correctly this summer. Development work in Northern
Ireland has shown the benefit and profitability of feeding at grass.
On the mainland, farmer's should be 29p /cow/day better off as our
raw material market is more cost effective than Northern Ireland.

REASEHEATH
STUDENTS VISIT HOLMES CHAPEL MILL
Richard
Massey welcomed the 3rd year NDA students for a
tour of our Holmes Chapel mill. It was good to see 20 students on the
course which is a credit to Reaseheath college & shows us all there is
confidence in the future of agriculture. The students were asked to
bring silage samples with them and they were able to see them being
analysed at the mill. They were then given a tour of the mill followed
by a session where a ration was formulated using the results of their
silage results. There was plenty of input from everyone. It was a most
enjoyable and informative day for everyone.
DO YOU
KNOW WHAT YOUR ANIMAL IS EATING?
Although
many farmers are enjoying an extended
grazing season, there is a
large variation of animal performance. Massey Feeds have noticed a
wide range of analysis in the many silage samples they have tested.
Nigel Chew our ruminant specialist emphasised:
"It has never been more important to have your forage analysed so
you know exactly what the animal is eating and ask your local Massey
Feeds representative to formulate your winter ration."
Our customers who take the opportunity to use these free services agree
how important it is to monitor what the animal is eating properly so
they can achieve the best performance possible. Contact your local
Massey Feeds Representative or call 01477 536300 so you can monitor
what is happening on your farm correctly.
WAGONS WIN AT

that was helped by the weather. We had a busy marquee all day where
people could come and have a chat or sample Karol Bailey’s hot pot
followed by home made cakes in the afternoon, thanks Karol and Anne
(from the Holmes Chapel office) for all your hard work.
Thank you also to Mike Gorton who once again came with the First

were still there talking to customers as we left the showground at
6.00pm.
THE DAIRY EVENT
2006
Massey Feeds once again had a
stand at the Dairy event where we showed the growing success of a
family owned feed manufacturer.
On the other side of the stand we promoted the importance of feeding
a balanced diet including minerals. Massey Feeds have done a lot of
work with Frank Wright (mineral specialist) to prove it is important
to include the correct balance of minerals in the Dairy cow’s
ration.
FARM WALK DEMONSTRATES INTENSIVE

STAMFORD HERD OF PEDIGREE PUREBRED
AYRSHIRES
Stephen and Ann Oultram with the help of their son
Andrew and daughter Catherine farm at Newbridge Farm, North Wales.
They have a dairy herd of Pedigree Ayrshire cows, and achieve both high
yields and very high quality milk. In the Winter the cows are fed
both Maize Silage and 1st Cut Grass silage. To compliment this, a
tailor made parlour nut is fed, especially formulated to balance the mix
of forages.
All cows are kept pure, and all heifer and bull calves are reared.
Calves are reared on cow's milk, and then fed on Calf Sweet Start
Pellets. All bull calves are reared and are selected either for
breeding purposes or for beef. The beef bulls are intensively
reared and are ad-lib fed on Beef 7030 Nuts.
Stephen has had a long association with the Ayrshire breed and he is
now a Farmer Director of Cattle Services (Ayr) Ltd. who are
the main suppliers of Ayrshire semen in the UK. One of Stephens
main interests is breeding and judging Ayrshire cattle.
2005 has been an exceptional year for the Stamford Herd. The whole
family are involved in showing their cattle, and this year they have had
a very successful showing season. The star performer was a
3rd calver called Stamford Flash Girl 22.
She won a total of Seven Breed and Four Inter Breed Championships,
including prestigious wins at the Royal and Royal Welsh Shows.
Other successes were at Cheshire, Flint & Denbigh, Nantwich, Anglesey &
Oswestry.
For any one who may be interested, there is usually a supply of summer

ANOTHER
SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR MASSEY FEEDS TURKEY CUSTOMERS
After speaking to several turkey customers in the New Year we were
extremely pleased to hear of the results they achieved with their
Christmas birds. Despite all the scares concerning Avian Flu, their
customers wanted good quality local birds and were willing to pay the
premium for this.
Massey Bros (Feeds) Ltd have always listened to our customers comments
on how we can work together to improve the out put of our products, this
is certainly true in the turkey trade where we have worked closely with
our customers, so that we can offer an extensive feed range and
management package to suit the modern turkey.
This relationship has proved successful with a number of customers,
nowhere more so than with J S Bailey & Sons with whom Massey Bros have
worked in conjunction with for several years. This year J S Bailey &
Sons have gone a step further to promote the Cheshire Bred Cheshire Fed
turkey with a whole new range of packaging to promote this along with
recipe ideas so the housewife can enjoy even more the taste of a locally
bred locally fed turkey.

BIG BALES WIN CHESHIRE
SILAGE COMPETITION
Cheshire
farmer Phillip Brocklehurst caused a surprise at this year's Cheshire
grassland society silage competition when he was crowned overall winner
with his Big Bale silage.
Phillip milks 70 cows
on a rented farm where his silage making routine is the same as the rest
of his farming policy. The key phrase is Attention To Detail. This
starts by choosing the right grass mixtures for his farm, Phillip takes
full advantage of the grass watch and grass analysis services offered by
Massey Bros (Feeds) Ltd to record the growth stage of both grazing and
mowing grass.
Local contractors are
used for making the big bales who apply Sil-All 4x4 silage additive.
The competition takes
into account the overall farm situation including cow health ,milk
quality and the complete diet. This has been improved on Phillip's farm
since his purchase this winter of a Collinson's out of parlour feeder,
so that all the cows can be individually fed up to six times a day.
Well done to Phillip
from all at Massey Bros for this well deserved prize.

QUALITY MILK FROM GRASS CONFERENCE
Wednesday 2nd March 2005 Today Massey Bros (Feeds) Ltd held a very successful conference entitled” Quality Milk from Grass”.
Sixty North West dairy farmers attended the event which was held at the Cranage mill.
The first speaker was David Wilde the Technical Ruminants Manager for Alltech UK.
David emphasised the importance of maximising grazed grass to the dairy cow to improve milk quality, fertility and reduce cell counts. The audience agreed that these were a major factor on their farms which initiated further discussion.
Phil Stirk from Massey Bros spoke next. He informed the audience on how Massey Bros would be implementing the benefits discussed by David into their new Q range of summer feeds.
Secondly Phil discussed the results and benefits of Massey Bros’ Grass Watch’; this is done on a weekly basis throughout our trading area measuring energy, protein and most importantly dry matter intake. The ‘Grass Watch' results can be viewed on this web site weekly.
The 2nd part of the agenda was on the single farm payment. This section was comprehensively explained by Nigel Chew, Massey Bros Ruminant Manager, he outlined the effect the mid term review would have on the people in the audience including the Welsh farmers present (although he still spoke English). Nigel did an excellent job explaining this in terms that everybody could understand and has obviously got a good knowledge of the single farm payment, especially the enhancements and stacking terminology.
An excellent lunch concluded the meeting with plenty of healthy discussions carrying on into the afternoon.
Further details on the 3 speaker’s presentations and Massey Bros (Feeds) Ltd Q range summer feeds contact your local salesman or e-mail admin@masseyfeeds.co.uk
