The Opportunity of a Life Time The last time milk prices reached the dizzy heights of 26p per litre, leasing costs were biting into profitability. This time round that is very unlikely to happen. Who would have believed 5 months ago that feed prices were to rise by £50 per tonne and milk prices by almost 10p per litre? This situation gives milk producers the opportunity of a life to re-establish the profitability of the past, recover from some very poor years and to move forward into a very profitable position. £50 per tonne on feed cost means an extra 2p per litre feed cost leaving and increase margin over feed of 8p per litre. Ensure the energy in the diet comes from the correct source, enough starch and sugar but not too much, and the correct level of fibre. Fibre sources supply much of a cow’s diet but the correct structure of the fibre is equally important. Imbalances on the energy side of the diet can lead to SARA (sub acute rumen acidosis).
